ADVENTURE EDUCATION

What is Adventure Education?
Inspired by Outward Bound founder Kurt Hahn, our Adventure Education program is rooted in the belief that young people grow stronger, more compassionate, and more resilient through meaningful challenge. Hahn envisioned a world shaped by individuals who discover they are more capable than they ever imagined—especially through experiences in the natural world.
At Renaissance, Adventure Education isn’t limited to remote wilderness trips. It can happen anywhere—on a mountain trail, in a classroom, during a debrief, or in the reflection that follows. What matters most is the mindset: stepping out of comfort zones, facing challenges together, and learning through both failure and success.
Students emerge with increased confidence, deeper self-awareness, and a greater sense of respect—for themselves, their peers, and their community. Even small achievements can spark life-long habits of courage and contribution.
A core principle of our program is the belief that “you are needed.” Every student has a role. Every student contributes. Through teamwork and shared responsibility, students live out the idea that "we are crew, not passengers.”

Why Adventure Education?
Adventure Education helps to establish a sense of crew at our school and provides opportunities for student to persevere in challenges beyond the classroom. It honors every student and is inclusive of all interests and intelligences.
At Renaissance, we recognize the importance of teaching the "whole child", which includes academic learning, social and emotional wellness and physical safety. Through this collective experience, students work together, embrace each other with authentic empathy and develop a strong sense of crew. Every student is valued and needed.
Whether on a rock climbing wall, a hike, a team building initiative, or an overnight camping voyage, Adventure Education is a natural avenue for students to access and enhance essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, creativity, problem solving, empowerment, global awareness, and citizenship.
