My Favorite Things

Meet Ms. Mikaela

I have loved learning and exploring for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my family moved frequently, and I lived in five different states before graduating from high school. Those experiences taught me how to adapt, connect with others, and embrace new adventures; lessons that continue to shape who I am as both a teacher and a person.

I earned my degree in Elementary Education from Towson University near Baltimore, Maryland, and began teaching in 2001. Throughout my career, I have taught almost all of the elementary grades, and have also worked as a literacy interventionist supporting students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 2023, I returned to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, further deepening my commitment to continuous learning and growth as an educator.

In 2014, my husband, Will, our son, Mason, and I moved to Castle Rock and quickly fell in love with Colorado’s beauty and outdoor lifestyle. A few years later, Mason began attending Renaissance Expeditionary Magnet School, and our family experienced firsthand what makes REMS such a special place. The welcoming community, meaningful learning experiences, strong sense of belonging, and spirit of adventure made me excited to join the staff in 2019. I began at REMS as a third grade teacher and was thrilled to move to first grade in 2022; a grade level that has always held a special place in my heart.

I feel incredibly fortunate to teach at Renaissance. I believe every child is capable of remarkable growth when they are challenged, supported, and inspired. Through the expeditionary learning model, I strive to help students build mastery of knowledge and skills, create high-quality work they are proud of, and develop strong character through our Core Values of Crew. My classroom is a place where curiosity, perseverance, kindness, and collaboration are celebrated each day.

When I’m not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking, camping, paddle boarding, traveling, trying new restaurants, and reading..especially if I can enjoy a good book outdoors in the sun.

I am grateful to be part of the REMS community and look forward to another year of learning, growing, and adventuring alongside my students. Together, We Are Crew!
